Eleven

Not long after Hall left the nightclub, Kowalski put in a call to Palumbo to have a meeting. He wanted to clear the air and get the truth out of what was likely to be his former partner. Kowalski didn’t say what he wanted that way Palumbo didn’t have time to prepare some lie beforehand. They agreed to meet at Kowalski’s nightclub at ten the next morning. Palumbo tried to avoid doing business at night. Whether it was actually true or not, it was his opinion that when deals went bad, they happened after dark. People seemed to always be on better behavior during the day.

When Palumbo arrived for his meeting, he was accompanied by three well-built bodyguards who went with him everywhere. A man of his position and stature was bound to run into trouble now and then, plus it helped to flex a little extra muscle when it was needed. Especially after an assassination attempt was made on his life ten years ago by an overanxious underling who thought it was his time to rise to power. Now, he didn’t go anywhere without being heavily protected.

After being led into Kowalski’s office, he immediately knew something was up when he saw his partner’s four henchmen standing there. He never felt the need to have them all there before for one of their meetings. Kowalski usually had one, maybe two men with him, which was usually expected. But to have four in there was a message to Palumbo. At least that’s how he took it. It was a show of force and aggression.

Before taking a seat, Palumbo stood near the door, his three guards behind him. He sized the situation up before doing or saying anything. He’d seen them all in better, healthier days. Though Kowalski had made him aware of the problems he was having securing his merchandise, he didn’t tell him the lengths of the problem. Hall certainly had done a number on all of them.

“Have a seat,” Kowalski said, extending his arm to the chair in front of the desk.

Palumbo obliged, a smirk on his face as he glanced at Kowalski’s muscle. He wasn’t intimidated in the least at the attempt by his partner to show some force. He was a very confident man, probably overly so, bordering on cocky at times. He was a powerful man who didn’t believe he could be touched. Not by the law, not by his partners-in-crime, not anyone. He looked the part of a flashy and wealthy man, wearing thousand-dollar suits, expensive watches and jewelry. He was in his late thirties, and though he was just an average looking man, had a great gift in being able to read people and situations. He knew what made people tick, what they desired, what they wanted, and what they were willing to do to get it. He was a great judge of character. He was also a master manipulator. He could get anyone, friend or foe, to believe almost anything he was saying.
